Why Does Money Matter In A Relationship?
One of the leading causes of the break ups in relationships, especially in the marriage relationship, is the issue of money. It seems that for all our advancement in this age, we have just never gotten around this one at all. Just why does money matter in any relationship?
Money is a Tool
We need money to do things, especially in our age. Did you know that money is the answer for everything? (see Ecclesiastes 10:19). Really, most of the things we do today require money and, apparently, even back in Solomon David’s day, it was the same. We sure haven’t changed much.
Money is a tool and it is only as good as the user.
It Helps You Express Yourself
Money is amoral. It is neither good or bad but the one who uses it holds the key to the use of money. It can be used to pay off a ransom or help earthquake victims or buy brain damaging drugs. Money buys Bibles as well as porn. Money can be used to buy a gift for your spouse or hold them ransom for something they really need.
Bottom line is: money only amplifies who you are.
It Gives You Options
Money gives you options. See you can either take a coach, drive or fly depending on how much money you have. You can live in low density housing area or mid or high. You can afford expensive insurance or regular. You can get a leather bound Bible or an ordinary one. You can buy regular beer or Scotch Whisky.
You can get her a nicely done bouquet of flowers or just a flower in plastic wrapping with a red ribbon. You can get him an expensive tux or just a regular one. You get the drift, you determine options based on how much you have or earn.
It Can Make Or Break Your Marriage
Money can make or break your marriage depending on how you handle it. You will do well to learn the habits, perspectives of your spouse, as well as yours, when it comes to money issues. You will notice that the school systems do not teach us a lot about earning, managing and investing money. For the most part, we learn from those who have gone before us.
So why does money matter in relationships? Marriage relationships? Because it is one of the things that really exposes us for who we are. How we use it tells stories about our insecurities, hopes, dreams, fears. The trick we have before us is to learn to harness all these and use them to build our marriage relationships to be stronger.
