“God Bless Me” Should Not Be Prayed By Today’s Christian
Shocking, I know. We have lots of material that tells us to ask God to bless us. I am talking about the prayer of Jabez, Jacob wrestling with the angel and on and on. The reason I am proposing that we should not be praying to God to bless us as today’s Christian has to do with how we focus on what we want him to do for us and we do not seem to take time to talk about what he has done already and how much of that is a blessing. It will change everything.
The fact of the matter is: we are already blessed in Christ. And before you go off on a tangent on this, read in your Bible in Ephesians 1:3, never mind that, I have pasted the verse for you here
3May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!
Amplified Bible (AMP) (emphasis mine) Bible quote from www.biblegateway.com
The issue here is that we are already blessed. It’s there in the scriptures. However, the blessings are in the heavenly realm. Did you see that? That is where the majority of us are struggling.
Let’s go to another scripture in 2 Peter 1:3
3For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [[d]full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).
I think we miss out on something here. The verse says that we have been given all things for life and godliness. So how come we as Christians are struggling? How do we get these blessings to manifest within our lives? I am sure it is not by asking God to bless us. He has already blessed us.
Case in point: I recall the countless times I have had to tell my kids that they do not need to ask if they can have the food that’s set on the table for the family. It is theirs, that’s why it is there! Now they don’t ask anymore.
So I don’t pray to God to save people anymore. I pray for the spreading of his word because I realized they will be saved when they hear the Word of God. So I pray that God will make ways to get His Word to people and use me wherever I get the opportunity. It’s been amazing so far. I have seen more people decide to follow Jesus in the past weeks than I have since January. ..and that’s a shame on me really. I could do more.
So do I pray? Yes, that God will bring more opportunities for me to share His word because His word is the only thing the people need to hear to be saved.
